Cocoon is an up-market lounge bar with a distinct New York feel.
Long deep sofas and plush armchairs, the place feels open and uncluttered. Plasma screens on the walls display a mix of Model TV, fashion-programs and music videos. The décor is cool, tending towards the stylish rather than the gaudy, contrived designs so common in modern bars. The staff are friendly, polite and helpful and the emphasis all-round is quality. A rarity in Dublin bars, this applies to the coffee as well as to alcoholic beverages. They also serve sandwiches and some very fine pastries from noon til 5pm.
The patrons tend to be very beautiful and well behaved, so there is no point in choosing Cocoon for a mad night out. It is great for a drink late in the afternoon, to rest your feet after a day's shopping or strolling around town, or later in the evening if you want to be seen.
Unfortunately, like too many other places in Dublin, sometime around 9.30 on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays, a DJ comes in to play. While the music is good, the DJ's desire to be heard over everybody's conversation means that the music is too loud and you'll have to shout to hold a conversation, which generally means simplistic topics at best (“Terrible weather!” “Nice dress!” “Where's the …”).
Also the drinks cost a little above the odds, but it's worth it if you are looking for somewhere comfortable with a bit of glamour.
