Norman Jay
The Latin Quarter Festival presents legendary DJ, Norman Jay at the Temple Bar Music Centre on Friday, the 30th of July.

One of the most respected DJs around, Norman Jay has spearheaded the sound of house and acid jazz music for the last two decades. He brings he rare mix of grooves to the Temple Bar Music Centre at the end of July.

From London,Jay is the son of first-generation West Indians. He began buying reggae and soul records from an early age and debuted as a DJ when he was only eight years old. Norman became interested in funk in the early 70s and went to Northern soul hotspots such as Wigan and Blackpool.

Norman merged his set with his brother Joey who was having great success with his Great Tribulation reggae sound system. They set up the Good Times sound system which incorporated soul, funk, reggae, disco and dub. The Good Times Sound System began a long standing relationship with London's Notting Hill Carnival in 1980 and soon the brothers became legends on the London club scene.

In 1985 Norman founded Kiss FM with Gordon Mac which would go on to be London's most famous and popular pirate station. Jay's reputation meant that he could charm the likes of Giles Peterson, Danny Rampling, Trevor Nelson, Jazzie B and Judge Jules to DJ on the station.

On his show “Original Rare Groove Show” Norman popularised his favourite 70's funk artists Roy Ayers and Fela Kuti for a whole generation of young clubbers. Along with Giles Peterson, Jay would see the trend they started in rare groove transform into acid jazz and would see London's underground have the mainstream revolution it's experienced in the last decade.

Norman Jay is one of the most respected and finest DJs around and even the Queen picked up on the man's reputation recently awarding Jay an MBE medal. Do not miss this chance to miss a pivotal figure in everything that's been rockin' the British dance movement for the last two decades.
