UNKLE
UNKLE, James Lavelle innovative musical collective, play Redbox on Friday, the 13th of August.
UNKLE originally comprised the talents of James Lavelle, Tim Goldsworthy and Kudo. James Lavelle set up the record label Mo' Wax in the early '90s, which created an impressive roster of acts who blended jazz, hip-hop, electro, techno and drum and bass like DJ Krush, DJ Shadow and Money Mark. Goldsworthy was a childhood friend of Lavelle and Kudo was a producer from the Major Force Label who had impressed Lavelle with the Love T.K.O. project. UNKLE's first single, “The Time Has Come” featuring remixes of Plaid and Portishead played a central role in the emerging Mo' Wax sound and was a big hit in the Independent charts.
When Lavelle started working on UNKLE's debut album, DJ Shadow began to take a very active role in the project and played a central part in forging the album's sound. Lavelle's dream was to intertwine different genres of music bringing rock vocalists like Thom Yorke and Richard Ashcroft into the realm of trip-hop to create a disturbing and exciting hybrid. Psyence Fiction was released in 1988 and was a big hit with music critics and establishing a big fan base for UNKLE in the UK dance and rock scene.
After the album was released the ever-changing line-up saw DJ Shadow leave and vocalist Richard File and songwriter Ant Genn joining the group. UNKLE released their second album Never, Never, Land. in 2003 with guest performances by Ian Brown, Jarvis Cocker, Brian Eno, Massive Attack's 3D and Queen's of the Stone Age frontman, Josh Homme. The album's inventive and paranoid sound drew comparisons with Radiohead and was another hit with music critics and fans. One of the most interesting groups in dance music, UNKLE play the Redbox on the 13th of August.
