Josh Brolin plays Llewelyn Moss, an everyday guy who stumbles across a heroin deal gone wrong on the Texas-Mexico border, and discovers two million dollars among the wreckage. So he decides (as a lot of people would) to take the money and run, thus setting up this outstanding Cohen Brothers thriller - a masterpiece to rival, maybe surpass, their earlier Fargo.
Tommy Lee Jones and Woody Harrelson play Sherriff Ed Tom Bell and Crime boss Carson Wells, two men attempting to save Moss from the psychotic Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who also wants the money and will stop at nothing to get it. As Chigurh, Bardem achieves the creepiest movie pyscho seen in a long time. His hair hangs like a butcher's apron over his head, his weapon of choice is a compressed-gas powered bolt ( the type used for killing cattle) and we genuinely wonder what has to be done to stop him.
With Moss on the run and all shades of trouble chasing, him we see what kinds of sacrifices an man will make for money. And while the noose slowly tightens around Moss's neck, the focus of film shifts to Sherriff Bell - an aging lawman from a family of lawmen - unable to come to terms with the new way of things. Drugs, mindless psychos and the overarching power of organised crime are all beyond this simple southern man.
The Coen Brother's are in danger of being accused of genius for the first time in nearly a decade but for any fans expecting The Big Lebowski be warned that No Country For Old Men is closer to the bleaker works like Blood Simple or Miller's Crossing. This film is dark, violent, and downright mean. To paraphrase Sheriff Bell in the movie ("If this ain't a mess It'll do till real mess gets here") - it may be early in 2008, but if this isn't the best film of the year, it'll do till the real one gets here!
