A film within a film telling the story of one cast and crew and eighteenth century fictional character, Tristam Shandy.
A Cock and Bull Story is the brave attempt by Michael Winterbottom to adapt Laurence Sterne's eccentric novel, The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy.
Michael Winterbottom's (9 Songs, 24 Hour Party People) movie is an Altmanesque production. A Cock and Bull Story depicts an English crew shooting Laurence's Sterne's eighteenth-century literary classic. There is a terriffically funny cast including Steve Coogan and costar Rob Bryden. Coogan stars as Shandy and gives a meandering account of Tristam's childhood and birth.
A Cock and Bull Story is an entertaining depiction at all the difficulties in adapting and filming such a convoluted novel. This is a postmodern production that interweaves the life of Tristam Shandy with the cast and crew filming the movie.
A Cock and Bull Story includes lots of witty references to Coogan's other projects such as Alan Partridge, Around the World in Eighty Days. This is a daft and hilarious interpretation of an eighteenth century novel that is almost impossible to adapt which makes ideal viewing for Steve Coogan fans.
A Cock and Bull Story opens on Friday, 20th January.
