Hysteria is playing at the Project Theatre in Dublin from 10th May until 3rd June.(reviewed)
The Irish premiere of the Olivier Award-Winning Comedy, Hysteria is being staged at the Project Theatre. The much acclaimed Dublin Theatre company, B*Spoke will present this premiere. Not for the faint-hearted, Hysteria is an indepth and dramatic exploration of Freud's theories.
Set in Sigmund Freud's study in London in 1938, Hysteria is a comical, intense and bizarre meeting between Freud, Salvador Dali and a scantily dressed woman named Isabelle.
Terry Johnson's clever script strips away at Freud's theories of woman, penis envy and his conflict with fatherhood. Dali played by Rory Keenan is a deliciously farcical character and his dialogue and overdramatic bravado adds light comedy to the production. Adding a third dimension to this explosive play is a young mysterious woman (Alison Mc Kenna) who is fond of taking her clothes off!
The entire cast including Freud's friend, Dr. Yahuda (John Olohan) give solid and impressive performances. The closing scenes of Hysteria are full of striking special effects and a real explosion of surrealism, fantasy and quality theatre.
Highly intense scenes are balanced nicely with some titilating farcical sequences. Hysteria is a masterful production with excellent direction by Loveday Ingram.
