The Abbey is bringing back Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars
this June; the show will run from the 4th until the 12th of July.
O'Casey's masterpiece The Plough and the Stars, which premiered at The Abbey in 1926, had not been performed there in ten years until last November. The y are rerunning the show because of its tremendous success on that occasion.
Depicting Dublin tenement life during the 1916 Rising, O'Casey's masterpiece paints a vivid portrait of a city in turmoil. None of the characters or situations are blatant or stereotypical, instead they are invested with humanity with selfishness, cowardice, blind obedience, but also love, cameraderie and altruism.
It is a play that opens our eyes to the situation in which it is set, but also, and more importantly, to the inner workings of Mankind: it is a true classic.
