Bread & Circus
The latest piece from contemporary dance company Rex Levitates runs at the Project from the 24th to the 28th of June.

Founded in 1999 by Liz and Jenny Roche, Rex Levitates have produced two pieces a year, from Peeling Venus presented at Temple Bar's Diversions Festival in 1999 to Their Thoughts Are Thinking Them at last year's Dublin Fringe Festival, for which Liz Roche received the Jayne Snow Award for Choreography.

Rex Levitates' ninth production is Bread & Circus, a new piece exploring strength, survival and perseverance, developed from the idea of gladiatorial combat in the Roman arenas. The seven performers are pushed to their physical limits as they face grueling and dangerous trials for the entertainment of the populace. The ancient arena and the contemporary performance space are compared through performer's ordeal and through images of violence, exhaustion and collapse.

Choreographed by Liz Roche, Bread & Circus features an original score from Denis Roche and Lighting Design by Morleigh Steinberg. The dancers are: Jenny Roche, Grant McLay, Katherine O'Malley, Lisa McLoughlin, Robert Jackson, Justine Doswell and James Hosty.
