It might be inspired by the Old English poem of the same name, but there's nothing dated about Connor MacPherson's celebrated new play, The Seafarer. Set a house in Baldoyle, the action takes place during a card-game between two brothers, Sharky and Richard, and a couple drinking buddies one Christmas Eve.
The game takes a sinister and supernatural turn when a mysterious stranger joins the table and raises the stakes to a terrifying level. As Sharky's dubious past is revealed to the audience, he finds himself quite literally playing for his soul. The question is, though, does he deserve to be saved?
Since his debut on the Irish theatre scene over a decade and a half ago, Conor McPherson has carved a niche for himself as a clever and imaginative writer who specialises in imperilled souls and men-on-the-edge. The Seafarer might take these concepts more literally than most, but with a fantastic script and timeless theme, it's no wonder the playing has been brewing up a storm of rave reviews since it debuted in London last year.
Don't miss the Irish premiere of this amazing play. Book your tickets online now, or by calling the Abbey Theatre Box Office on (01) 87 87 222.
