Jackie Mason, the irreverent and hilarious New York comic, plays Vicar Street on the 1st of July
The American Jewish community have given the world of comedy some of its leading lights, The Marx Brothers, Lenny Bruce, Woody Allen and the incomparable, Jackie Mason. Mason combines biting comedic satire, insightful observations on the foibles of modern life and impeccable timing to create material that leave audiences rolling in the aisles. Jackie Mason was nearly lost to the world of comedy, as he had originally hoped to be of all things, a rabbi. Born in Wisconsin but raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Mason was surrounded by rabbis. His father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great, great-grandfather were all rabbis, as well as his three brothers. When he was 25, Mason was ordained a rabbi but quit his calling three years later to become a comedian because “Somebody in the family has to make a living”.
Jackie Mason rose to be one of the hottest comedians in America in the early '60s. He became a regular on The Ed Sullivan Show only to fall out with O'Sullivan over a hand gesture during a live performance in 1962. The incident cast a shadow over Mason's career for over a decade but Mason came back with his own one-man show The World According To Me in 1984. The show ran on Broadway for an unprecedented two and a half year run.
Mason has had a run of successful shows in the last two decades including, Jackie Mason: Brand New, Jackie Mason: Politically Incorrect and Prunish Danish. HBO did a special show on Mason, Jackie Mason on Broadway which went on to win an Emmy. Mason also hosts a syndicated radio talk show on his favourite subject, politics with friend and collaborator, Raoul Lionel Felder.
A man whose brilliant, irreverent brand of comedy transcends cultural, political and social boundaries, the many can make comedy gold dust out of the simplest subject matter. So don't be a schlub, schlep on down to Vicar Street and show the man some respect.
