Over the years, The Comedy Cellar has been a starting point for many of Ireland's most talented comedians...
Back in February 1988 Mr Trellis, a comedy group consisting of Dermot Carmody, Ardal O'Hanlon, Barry Murphy and Kevin Gildea, began with a few sketches and stand-up shows, whenever they had enough material to put on. After a few shows, other comedians and groups asked to join in, and the name of the night was changed to The Comedy Cellar.
Audiences were slow to build up at first, but as time passed, the draw of the place grew, on both audiences and emerging comic talent. And though the original members of Mr Trellis have all moved on, The Comedy Cellar lives on, with new acts and old hands fighting for the stage.
Today, The Comedy Club remains one of the best comedy nights in Dublin. Check it out on Wednesday nights, upstairs at The International; get there for 8.30pm.
