Pam Ayres
Pam Ayres brings her collection of comic poems to the National Concert Hall for a performance on Friday, the 8th of April.
It's 30 years since Pam Ayres got her big break on the TV talent show Opportunity Knocks and began what has proved to be a very popular career as a writer of comic verse. She brings her 30th anniversary tour entitled They Should Have Asked My Husband to Dublin for a special show in April.
Pam Ayres had always wanted to be a writer and it was during her time with the Women's Royal Air Force that she began to act and sing and thought of a career as an entertainer. After leaving the WRAF, she began performing her poems in a local folk club and began publishing her own poems in two collections, The Entire Collection (8) of Masterpieces by Pam Ayres and Famous Poet and Washer of Jamjars.
In 1975, Ayres' friends finally convinced her to audition for Opportunity Knocks and the British public were instantly hooked. In the last three decades, Ayres has been a regular on TV and Radio, sold more than two million books and recorded a number of popular albums. One of Ayres' most popular poems, "I Wish I'd Look After me Teeth" was voted into the Top Ten of a BBC poll to find the 100 Favourite Comic Poems.
Pam Ayres has been delighting audiences around the world with solo shows in theatres in the UK, Ireland, the Middle East, Hong Kong, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Her light comic styles and funny poems are sure to have the patrons of the National Concert Hall in stitches on the 8th as well.
