THE DIRTY JAZZ CLUB
Venue: The Southwilliam Basement, Southwilliam Street
Date: Every Tuesday
Time: 21.30
Admission: €7
After spending the last few years at the International Bar, that amorphous group of jazz musicians known as The Dirty Jazz Band have moved to The Southwilliam Basement, bringing their fantastic Free Jazz Flair uptown!!
The line-up has changed plenty of times since the club kicked off way back when, and they have guests in on a regular basis too (just in case you might ever think you know what to expect) - but the one thing you can always guarantee is a great night out and some seriously cool music.
The core of current line-up consists of five members, namely Conor Murray (still drumming after all these years), Cormac O'Brien (plucking them bass strings for all he's worth), Billy Blackmore (introducing the band members, playing the trumpet and adjusting his glasses), Bronek Szalanski (smiling Polish chap and tenor sax player) and Darragh O'Kelly (keyboard player and unrelated to the Kelly chap by the door).
Inspirations range from Keith Jarrett and Prince to Stravinsky and Claude Debussy, passing through the whole range of great Jazz-men like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Fred Anderson, Elvin Jones, Herbie Hancock and so on. As you can imagine, there's a bit of a fusion thing going on, with each of the musicians bringing something different to the mix.
This is no garden-shed jam though, the multitude of influences are blended with an easy Free Jazz flair. No surprise then that Coltrane's name comes up more often than any other when the band talk Jazz.
So check out the Dirty Jazz Band at thei new home - and give yourself a night out to remember!
