John Williams - Walton's Guitar Festival of Ireland 2005
John Williams, the renowned classical guitarist, plays the National Concert Hall on Thursday the 29th of June.

John Williams is best remembered for his poignant recording of "Cavatina" for the hit movie, The Deer Hunter. For the last four decades, Williams has popularised the world of classical guitar music and brought popular music, jazz and folk into his classical repertoire.

John Williams took his first guitar lessons at the age of seven from his father and by the time he was eleven he was sent to study under the tutelage of Andreas Segovia. The following year with Segovia's endorsement he earned a scholarship to Siena's Academia Musicale Chigiana. Williams entered the Royal College of Music in 1956 to study piano and composition. He made his London concert debut at Wigmore Hall in 1958 and his Paris debut followed a year later.

For the next decade, Williams would juggle his extensive concert performance with his teaching post at the Royal College of Music. He signed to Columbia Records' Masterworks division at the end of the 1960s. Williams had a broad musical vision that has seem him incorporate jazz and popular music into his standard classical guitar repertoire.

Williams has worked with most of Britain's best orchestras but has also performed and recorded pop, folk and jazz music as well. He became a regular performer at Ronnie Scott's, blending the worlds of jazz and classical music. In 1978, Williams formed Sky with Francis Monkman, Tristan Fry, Kevin Peek and Herbie Flowers, a band that fused the rock and classical music into a sophisticated hybrid.

Williams has collaborated with Julian Bream, Itzhak Perlman and Andre Previn and continues to record classical work with Sony Classical. For his concert in the National Concert Hall, Williams will be joined by multi-instrumentalist, Richard Harvey on flutes, pipes, whistles and other instruments. One of the most respected and versatile guitarists in the world, John Williams plays the National Concert Hall on the 29th of June.
