Pierce Turner, Wexford's finest singer/songwriter, plays Whelans on Saturday, the 10th of December.
Pierce Turner showcases songs from his new album, The Boy To Be With with a concert at one of his notorious Christmas bashes in Whelans.
Pierce Turner was born into a family of entertainers in the town of Wexford. He began his musical life as a boy soprano in the church choir and progressed to singing and playing keyboards in a popular showband called The Arrows. In 1980, Turner emigrated to New York with his friend, Larry Kirwan and together they formed the band, The Major Thinkers.
In 1985, Turner embarked on a solo career and signed to independent label, Beggars Banquet. 1997 saw the release of his debut album It's Only A Long Way Across, produced by Philip Glass and Kurt Munkacsi featuring Glass's spellbinding string arrangements for "How It Shone".
Christy Moore covered a single from the album, "Wicklow Hills" and Turner's debut won a nomination in New York Music Awards. His second album, The Sky And The Ground was produced by Turner and Simon Boswell and released in 1989 garnered glowing reviews in Ireland.
The legendary producer of Leonard Cohen and The Band, John Simon oversaw Turner's third album, Now Is Heaven, which rode high in the albums polls of Hot Press in 1991. Over the last decade, Turner has kept the music coming on albums like Angelic Language, 3 Minute World and The Best of Pierce Turner, which was recently described as one of the Top 20 Irish recording of all time.
Pierce Turner's shows in Dublin are legendary involving his most famous songs, sung with great stage presence and a little crowd surfing of a kind that only Turner can do.
