Bulmers International Comedy Festival presents Ricky Gervais from
the hit comedy, The Office at The Point on the 12th of September.
At the age of 36, Ricky Gervais had been through a number of unusual jobs. He had studied Philosophy at London University and spent seven years as an entertainment' manager for a student's union. In the early '80s, he was part of a pop duo called Seona Dancing and also managed Suede at the beginning of their career. He became a presenter on indie radio station XFM and then he had the bright idea of going into comedy.
We first saw Ricky Gervais on TV on the Channel Four's The 11O'Clock Show and then the same channel gave him his own chat show, Meet Ricky Gervais. Gervais also made appearance on Vic Reeves Examines, Spaced and even Celebrity Late Night Poker. Then Gervais came out with the rather brilliant idea of writing comedy about the a Sough branch of paper suppliers, Wernham Hogg and the office's self-important office manager, David Brent and the BBC took him up on the idea.
The Office soon became a comedy cult hit with hilarious set pieces like Brent's bizarre attempt at dancing in front of the rest of his colleagues. The show is full of unforgettable and sometime awful scenes where Brent does everything to confirm your worst fears. The comedy was soon recognised as a modern day comedy classic and won a raft of awards including BAFTAs and Golden Globes. The Office has made its way around the world now and has made Gervais a very famous man in the process. For the Bulmers International Comedy Festival, Gervais will be performing his stand-up show, Politics.
