Tin Hat Trio
Tin Hat Trio, one of America's finest instrumental bands, play Whelans on the 27th of March. Tin Hat Trio are a new acoustic group who bring the finesse and precision of the classical world and the improvised joy of old time music to their eclectic music mix.

Tin Hat Trio features the musical talents of Rob Burger on accordion, piano, pump organ, harmonica, Carla Kilhlstedt on violin and viola and Mark Orton on guitar, dobro and banjo. The band uses their daunting improvisation abilities and deep musical understanding to create a style that crosses classical, folk, jazz and world music styles.

The musical pedigree of this band is unassailable. You only have to look at the kind of musicians they play with to see how good they are. Tin Hat Trio have worked with the likes of John Zorn, Tom Waits and Philip Glass. Mark Orton has played with The Lounge Lizards and has composed scores for independent films. Burger has studied under Max Roach and Archie Shepp and worked with artists as varied as DJ Mix Master Mike to Don Byron.

Tin Hat Trio take their musical inspiration from musical greats such as Django Reinhardt, Astor Piazolla and Charles Ives. The band released their debut album, Memory is an Elephant on Angle Records in 1999. Their second album, Helium featured the great American songwriter, Tom Waits. The band's most recent album, The Rodeo Eroded came out on Ropeadope Records. The album features a guest appearance from Willie Nelson who sings a haunting rendition of "Willow Weep For Me".

The Rodeo Eroded features music that combines the sound of Old World Europe with the rootsy sound of post-modern America. The band traverse, old syncopated jazz, south of the border honky-tonk, sensual dusty tangos and deeply soulful blues grooves. The band sound like Tom Waits backing band with a wider and more culturally varied musical palette. Well worth a look, Tin Hat Trio could just be the kind of challenging, engaging music you were looking for.
