John Squire, guitar genius from The Stones Roses, plays Temple Bar Music Centre on the 20th of March.
During his time with The Stone Roses, John Squire straddled the grand musical expanse between The Smith's Johnny Marr and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page. Squire made the guitar hip in the middle of late '80s dance revolution and laid the ground for Brit pop guitarist like Graham Coxon from Blur and Noel Gallagher from Oasis.
Born in Manchester, John Squire grew up on the same street as Ian Brown. The two became friends while attending the same school and shared a love of sixties pop and punk music. Squire acquired his first guitar when he was 15 and practiced night and day to perfect his technique. Squire put his first band together in 1982 with the moniker, The Waterfront. Squire would enlist Ian Brown and Reni into the line-up to form The Stone Roses in 1984. The Stone Roses were a fairly ordinary indie group until Brown and Squire had the genius to marry their love of simple but arresting '60s melodies to the dance rhythms of the late '80s.
Well-crafted singles such as “She Bangs The Drum” and “I Wanna Be Adored” were followed by The Stone Roses album. Their swift ascendancy in British rock was confirmed by their dance rock anthem “Fools Gold”. But the band took five years to release their follow-up album, Seconding Coming and critics panned the band for being out of date with their guitar heavy workouts. But the album produced such undeniably great songs as “Ten Storey Love Song” and “Love Spreads” and since it's release has been recognised as an overlooked classic. After the release of Seconding Coming the band split under the weight of public expectations and personal disagreements.
After The Stone Roses split up Squire formed a new band, The Seahorses in 1997. The band released one album, Do It Yourself before the band broke up. In the last few years, Squire has come back to the musical fold with two solo albums, Time Changes Everything and Marshall's House, which mines Squire's fascination with early '70s rock and folk. A night for lovers of the extended guitar solo, John Squire plays Temple Bar Music Centre on the 20th of March.
