The Marriage of Figaro, Mozart's operatic masterpiece, plays at the National Concert Hall on the 18th and 20th of February.
Set in Count Almavia's castle in Seville in the late 18th century, The Marriage of Figaro is based on Beaumarchais's play Le Folle Journèe, a sequel to his earlier play, Le Barbier de Sèville immortalised by Rossini in the opera, The Barber of Seville.
In The Barber of Seville, Figaro helps Count Almavia to woo Rosine away from her ward and intended husband, Dr. Bartolo. The Marriage of Figaro continues the story with the Count's marriage to Rosine in dire straits because of the Count's infidelities and Figaro intending to marry the Rosine's maid, Susanna.
The marriage of Figaro and Susanna is complicated by the Count's attempts to woo Susanna and Figaro's previous pledge to marry Dr. Bartolo's housekeeper, Marcellina for a loan. But Figaro finds out that Dr. Bartolo and Marcellina are his parents and all is forgive, while the Count gets his comeuppance in a clever and hilarious rouse devised by Figaro.
Filled with flirtation, humour and intrigue, the tangled web of love triangles weave their way through this intricate farce of marital in the 18th century and takes place in the course of a single day.
Featuring the Lyric Opera Orchestra and the chorus, The Marriage of Figaro features Sinead Campbell as Rosine, Sandra Oman as Susanna, Owen Gilhooly as Count Almavia and Roland Davitt as Figaro singing such stunning arias as "Dove sono", Dei Vieni, non tardar" and "Porgi amor".
A wonderful night of classic opera, The Marriage of Figaro takes place at the National Concert Hall on the 18th and 20thof February.
