Interference
Interference, legendary Dublin band, play Mother Redcaps Tavern on the 6th of March. If you were watching the “Other Voices: Songs from a Room” series on Network 2 last year, you may have caught a legendary Dublin band, Interference give a very special performance. Interference had a large cult following in Dublin in the early '90s built on their impressive live reputation. In the mid '90s, the lead singer Fergus O'Farrell's moved to Cork and subsequently, Interference have been quite over the last few years. The concert was special moment for everyone involved and started a whole new chapter in the band's musical career.

Interference was originally built around the singer and songwriter, Fergus O' Farell and the guitarist, James O'Leary. Fergus wrote songs inspired by his interest in early '70s songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits and used the broad range of his vocals to give spellbinding performances. Aided and abetted by band members Kevin Murphy on bass and Colm McCaughey on fiddle, the band developed a reputation as a brilliant live act. At the time Fergus was living in The Winstanley Shoe Factory, near Christchurch and hosted many late night jam sessions with many of the bands around Dublin in the early '90s.

When Fergus moved to Schull in the mid '90s, the band took a seven-year hiatus. In September 2002, the band played a reunion gig in Schull and the concert became a mini Woodstock. Philip King found out about the concert and started to play Interference on his “South Wind Blows” radio show every week. Philip was so taken with the public's reaction that he gave Interference a half hour show in the “Other Voices” series.

With renewed interest in the band, Fergal set about finishing the long-term project that became the band's debut album, Interference. Gavin Harte worked with Fergal for years to realise the album and “DanDan” FitzGerald designed a studio to oversee the recording and production in John Dillon Street, around the corner from The Winstanley Shoe Factory. The recording lay idle for a few years but Fergal and Gavin worked hard to put the finishing touches on the songs.

Last year, the band played a big comeback concert in Vicar Street featuring Maria Doyle Kennedy, Iarla O'Leonard and Gavin Friday. Joining Interference tonight is Paul Tiernan, who has played guitar with the band for a number of concerts and has become a new member of the band. Paul is a great songwriter in his own right and shares the stage with Interference for this concert in Mother Redcaps Tavern.
