Improvised Music Company and Dublin Jazz Society present the Original Dixieland Jazz Band at Vicar Street on Friday, the 30th of July.
Jazz fermented in the early part of the 20th century in the cultural melting pot of New Orleans. The first recording of this new and revolutionary musical genre was by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band led by the cornetist, Nick LaRocca. Their 78 disc, “Livery Stable Blues” and its flipside “Dixie Jazz Band One Step” was released by the Victor Talking Machine Company creating a riot in the music world. Selling an incredible 1.5 million copies worldwide, LaRocca and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band had unwittingly kick-started the Jazz era with musicians all over the world trying to emulate that distinctive New Orleans style.
Eight five years after the release of their first record, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band are still going strong and the La Rocca family connection still runs through the group with Nick's son, Jimmy leading the band. Jimmy La Rocca has surrounded himself with devotees of the New Orleans' style with Steve Suter on trombone, Tom Fischer on clarinet and a rhythm section comprising the musical talents of David Hansen, Al Bernard and Tom Roberts to recreate the early jazz sound of his father's band. In concert the Original Dixieland Jazz Band revive all the musical anarchy and intoxicating beats of early jazz classics like “Tiger Rag”, “Basin Street Blues” and “St Louis Blues”.
So for a night of jazz recalling the irrepressible joy and expression of New Orleans jazz, check out the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in Vicar Street on the 30th of August.
