The Ataris, American punk-pop band, play Temple Bar Music Centre on the 17th of February.
The Ataris are a punk-pop group built around the songwriting talents of Kris Roe. In 1997, Roe went to a Vandals concert and secured a demo into the hands of Vandal's member, Joe Escalante. Escalante was impressed by the recording and asked Roe to put a band together to record for his label, Kung-Fu records. Roe moved to California and formed The Ataris with Marco Pena on guitar, Mike Davenport on bass and Derrick Plourde on drums.
The Ataris began recording their debut album with Vandal's guitarist, Wayne Fitzgerald on recording duties. The album, Anywhere But Here, featured twenty tracks of punk-pop love songs with a sound reminiscent of Green Day and Blink-182. When Fat Mike owner of Fat Wreck Records heard The Ataris' debut album he set his sights on signing the band. As Fat Wreck Records was a bigger label that Kung-Fu records, The Ataris signed. The band's second album, Blue Skies, Broken Hearts…Next 12 Exits was released on Fat Wreck Records and was produced by Joey Cape. Featuring such punk-pop favourites as “I Won't Spend Another Night Alone” and the acoustic splendour of “My Hotel Year”, Blue Skies, Broken Hearts…Next 12 Exits proved to be The Ataris' breakthrough album.
The Ataris' next album, End Is Forever was released in 2001. Roe's songwriting brought the band closer to the alternative mainstream and away from the hardcore punk scene. His songs had always been the defining factor in the band's success featuring frantic rhythms blended into melodic love songs. The band's fourth album is a set of songs about Roe's memories of the trials and joys of his adolescent years. So Long, Astoria was released by The Ataris' new label, Columbia Records in 2003.
