Doves, Manchester indie rock trio, play the Olympia Theatre on the 28th of February.
Doves features the musical talents of Jimi Goodwin on bass and guitar and twin brothers, Jez Williams on guitar and Andy Williams drums with a broad, cinematic style reminiscent of Radiohead and The Verve.
They had previously collaborated together as the dance combo Sub Sub, scoring some dance-inflected hits such as the number three single, " Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)". Sensing that they needed a serious change of direction the band changed their name to Doves, taking a rockier and more experimental direction.
In 1998, they released the Cedar EP, selling out the records limited pressing and garnering a very positive reaction from the music press. After the "Sea Song" and "Here It Comes" EPs received more glowing reviews in the UK music press, Doves signed to Heavenly Recordings.
Doves released their debut album, Lost Souls in 2000 with brilliant psychedelic soundscapes as "Catch the Sun", "Rise" and "The Cedar Room" building the band a cult following either side of the Atlantic. In 2002, after two sellout tours of the US and working in five different recording studios, Doves returned with their second album The Last Broadcast.
The Last Broadcast featured inpsired, passionate songs such as "There Goes the Fear", "Words" and "Pounding". Sean O'Hagan delivered a wonderful orchestral arrangement for "Friday's Dust" and the band uses elements of electronica for the ambient sound of "The Sulphur Man".
Doves released their most recent single, "Black and Whitetown" last year with a new album due out in the near future. Promising to be a entertaining night of quality songs, Doves play the Olympia Theatre on the 28th.
