Wild Billy Childish & The Buff Medways, legendary British garage rockers, play Whelans on Saturday, the 18th of June.
Billy Childish has cut an eclectic path in British music over the last three decade with a brand of garage rock that has graced such bands as The Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars and his new band, The Buff Medways.
Stylish, eccentric, eclectic, seminal, Billy Childish is a distinctive artist in a wide range of disciplines, as a singer, songwriter, artist, poet, critic, fanzine editor and guitarist. Childish formed his first band, The Pop Rivets in response to the Punk explosion of 1977, recording the Greatest Hits and Empty Sound From Anarchy Ranch albums.
Billy Childish continued with a variety of different monikers including Thee Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars and Thee Headcoats continuing his fascination with 50's rock & roll and English R&B. A great believer in artistic and cultural devolution, he is the veritable epitome of the homemade ethic, having created more than a hundred albums, 2,000 paintings, 2 novels and 30 or more volumes of poetry.
Adored by everyone from Kurt Cobain to Jack White, Childish recently recorded two albums for Graham Coxon's label, Transcopic Records with his latest incarnation, The Friends of the The Buff Medway Fanciers or The Buff Medways. The Buff Medways cut a dash on stage with their Victorian army uniforms, playing a primitive and raw brand of rock & roll on vintage equipment.
A night of electrifying garage rock, Wild Billy Childish & The Buff Medways play Whelans on the 16th.
