Amadou & Mariam
Amadou & Mariam, African World Music duo, play the Olympia Theatre on Thursday, the 2nd of March.
After the success of their show at The Village last year, Amadou & Mariam return to the capitol showcasing songs from their critically acclaimed album, Dimache à Bamako.
Amadou & Marian have had a phenomenal response to their Dimache à Bamako album, produced by and featuring celebrated French/Latin artist, Manu Chao. Amadou & Mariam's latest successes add an international dimension to the reputation that they have long since acquired in their native Mali and throughout West Africa.
Amadou Bagayoko cut his teeth playing guitar in the Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako, one of the hottest bands in West Africa during the Seventies. His musical partnership with his wife Mariam Doumbia ignited after they met at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako. A series of cassette albums recorded in the Cote d'Ivorie during the late '80s and early '90s became so popular they were accorded the title Amadou et Mariam, Le Couple Aveugle du Mali.
These recordings found Amadou & Miriam an audience across the African continent and a European fan base when the duo settled in Paris. In the late '90s, Polydor and Sonodisc began releasing new material as well as compiling older material from their earlier cassettes. Since 1998, Amadou & Miriam have released a number of albums on major labels like Sou Ni Tile, The Ni Mousso and Wati that have enhanced their reputation around the world.
Amadou and Miriam came to the attention of Manu Chao, an artist who has transformed Latin music with his Clandestino album, and he agreed to produce their next album. The collaboration has created some stunning results on the Dimache à Bamako album with Manu Chao giving a light playfulness to the duo rootsy Malian sound on infectious new tracks like "La Rèalite", "Sènègal Fast Food" and "Beaux Dimanches".
A night of soulful, bluesy Malian music, Amadou & Miriam play the Olympia Theatre on the 2nd.
