Art Garfunkel
Art Garfunkel, legendary folk rock singer, plays Vicar Street on Thursday, the 29th of June.

One of the most distinctive voices in rock music, Art Garfunkel's soulful tenor has graced the classic tunes of Simon & Garfunkel like "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and a host of hits as a solo artist including "Bright Eyes".

Hailing from Queens in New York, Art Garfunkel began singing Everly songs at school with his friend, Paul Simon and scored an early hit, "Hey Schoolgirl" in 1957. By the early '60s, the dynamic duo were enthralled by the folk boom and began performing as Simon & Garfunkel.

Signed to Columbia Records, Simon & Garfunkel recorded their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. but only hit the charts when producer, Tom Wilson put a full electric rock band behind one of the album's strongest songs, "The Sound of Silence".

Released in early '66, "The Sound of Silence" went straight to the top of the charts and Simon & Garfunkel became one of the most popular acts of the late '60s with hit singles like "Mrs. Robinson", "The Sound of Silence" and "The Boxer", and classic albums like Bookends, The Graduate and Bridge Over Troubled Water.

In the early '70s, the duo parted company and Art Garfunkel embarked on a successful solo career as a singer with hit albums like Angel Clare, Breakaway and Watermark, and a critically acclaimed actor for his roles in movies like Carnal 22, Carnal Knowledge and Bad Timing: A Sensual Obsession.

In 1981 Simon & Garfunkel reformed for a concert in Central Park in front of 500,000 music fans and the duo embarked on an international tour. Throughout the '80s, Garfunkel kept busy recording hit singles like "Bright Eyes", new solo albums like Lefty and The Animals Christmas, and publishing a collection of poetry, Still Water.

Over the last decade, Garfunkel has trekked across America, toured his live show around the world and released solo albums like Across America, Songs From A Parent To The Child and Everything Waits To Be Noticed, a collaboration with Maia Sharp and Buddy Mondlock.

In 2003, Garfunkel reunited with his old partner, Paul Simon for the highly successful, Old Friends reunion tour which received glowing reviews when it came to the capitol.

Now you can catch this classic voice in the intimate atmosphere of Vicar Street, when Art Garfunkel returns to Dublin on the 29th of June.
