Sigur Ros, ethereal Icelandic indie rock group, play Oxegen 2006 on Sunday, the 9th of July.
Sigur Ros come to Oxegen to perform one of their sublime concerts, showcasing songs from their new album, Takk…alongside some of their best loved music from Agaetis Byrjun and ( ).
Over the last decade, Sigur Ros have been creating magical music reminiscent of Iceland's volcanic landscape, where the surfaces seems calm and peaceful but the emotion of the music reveals very powerful forces lying underneath.
Sigur Ros were formed in 1994 by three Icelandic teenagers, guitarist and vocalist, Jon Thor Birgisson, bassist Georg Holm and drummer, Agust. Their first recorded song earned them a deal with Icelandic label, Bad Taste and their experimental and ambient debut LP Von was released in 1997.
After the release of a remix album Recycle Bin, Sigur Ros began recording their second album, Agaetis Byrjun with new keyboardist, Kjartan Sveinsson. The album was a huge critical success in Iceland and was hailed as a masterpiece on its releases in the UK with classic songs like "Svefn-G-Englar" and "Ny Battery".
UK and Irish fans got a taste of the band's mesmerizing live show when they supported Godspeed You Black Emperor on their tour and gave a scintillating performance at All Tomorrow's Parties. Agust left the band to persue a career in graphic design and was replaced by Orri Pall Dyrason.
In 2002, Sigur Ros released their third album entitled ( ), with no lyrics or titles and a darker, rawer sound to Agaetis Byrjun that became another favourite of music critics. The album was an attempt to capture the band's mythical live versions of its dark material, creating a powerful piece of work which grew to be just as cherished as Agaetis Byrjun.
Sigur Ros put a halt to live performance for two years to record their fourth album, Takk…with co-producer Ken Thomas at their studio in Alafoss, Iceland. The album has a brighter sound than ( ) with light new compositions that are bursting with magical moments like "Milano", "Andvari" and "Svo Hljott".
