Damian Marley brings his infectious mix of reggae and hip-hop to Oxegen 2006 on Sunday, the 9th of July.
Although he has been on the scene for a decade, Damian Marley was one of the breakthrough artists of 2005 with the massive success of his single, "Welcome to Jamrock" and the subsequent album, Welcome to Jamrock.
Only two when reggae legend Bob Marley died, Damian Marley has been continuing his father's legacy by mixing classic reggae with new musical styles like hip-hop, R&B and dancehall.
Inspired by dancehall icons like Shabba Ranks and Super Cat, and the digital roots style of Sly and Robbie, Damian Marley released his debut album, Mr. Marley on his father's label, Tuff Gong with his brother, Stephen producing and co-writing several tracks on the album.
Taking the name of his seond album from a junction between the rich and poor parts of Kingston, Halfway Tree sees the Marley brothers joined by a stellar line-up of rap stars like Eve on "Where Is The Love?" and Treach of Naughty by Nature for "Stand a Chance", while sampling their father's classic "Could You Be Loved" for their track "And Be Loved".
Released in 2001, Halfway Tree resonated with urban tastemakers and won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2001. Marley spent the next four years working on his next opus writing classic Marley family consciousness songs like "For The Babies" and ballads of spiritual love like "There For You".
Damian and Stephen Marley were joined by famous rap artists in the studio while laying down their new album with Black Thought of The Roots featuring on "Pimpa's Paradise" and Nas guesting on "Road to Zion".
Documenting Marley's rage at the poverty and political violence raging in Jamaica over an Ini Kamoze sample, "Welcome to Jamrock" became an underground hit in the American urban scene last year and transformed into a massive crossover hit.
The subsequent album, Welcome to Jamrock delivers on the promise of Marley's hit single with fourteen tracks of love and war including scintillating new tracks like "Confrontation", "Khaki Suit" and "Move!".
A set of inspired contemporary reggae, Damian Marley plays Oxegen on Sunday, the 9th of July.
