Franz Ferdinand, Britain's hottest rock group, play Oxegen 2006 on Sunday, the 9th of July.
After their stunning performance at The Point Theatre last year, Franz Ferdinand come to Oxegen showcasing songs from their second album, You Could Have It So Much Better
Franz Ferdinand was formed in the Glasgow college art scene in 2001 when Bob Hardy and Alex Kapranos started making music together. They met Nicky McCarthy, a classically trained pianist and double bass player who took on the vacant position of drummer.
McCarthy could hit the drums but in no coherent manner and a drummer Paul Thomson had joined the band as a guitarist and when they changed instruments the band settled on that line-up.
Franz Ferdinand took their name from the unfortunate Austro-Hungarian Archduke whose murder started the First World War while their music was firmly rooted in the funky indie guitar music of the early '80s. Franz Ferdinand started rehearsing in an abandoned warehouse in Glasgow they named The Chateau and began to host events incorporating music and art.
So Franz Ferdinand took their live act to London and after long and lengthy negotiations signed to Domino Records. The group released their debut EP "Darts of Pleasure" in 2003 introducing their sharp lyrics, camp humour and infectious guitar licks.
Franz Ferdinand kept the hits rolling when they released their debut album, Franz Ferdinand with the wonderful "Matinee" and homoerotic, dance floor filler "Michael". Franz Ferdinand was a huge success selling a million copies and the band went on to pick up the Mercury Music Prize.
Franz Ferdinand's follow up album, You Could Have It So Much Better sees the band sticking to the template of spiky riffs, infectious beats and memorable choruses that made their debut such a success with exciting new tunes like "The Fallen", "Walking Away" and "Do You Want To".
A set of shiny, modern day pop classics, Franz Ferdinand play Oxegen 2006 on Sunday, the 9th of July.
