Manu Chao - Oxegen 2006
Manu Chao, French World Music star, plays Oxegen 2006 on Sunday, the 9th of July.

Manu Chao has become an international star over the last decade with a politically conscious brand of World music that merges an array of music styles and languages as he narrates his experiences travelling around the world.

Born in Paris in 1961 to Spanish parents, Manu Chao began to take an interest in music when he heard an exciting new brand of music coming from England, punk and under the sway of The Clash formed two bands, Les Hot Pants and Los Carayos.

Teaming up with his cousin and brother, Chao lit up the French alternative scene with the multi racial group Mano Negra with the success of their first single, "Mala Vida" and classic debut album, Patchanka.

Signed to Virgin, Mano Negra's mix of punk rock and exotic musical cultures proved to very popular in Europe and Africa with the band gaining critical acclaim for their explosive concerts and groundbreaking albums.

In 1995, Mano Negra went their separate ways and Chao moved to Madrid and South America, where he began soaking up the streets sounds of Latino music on a small portable studio for his first solo album Clandestino.

On Clandestino, Chao brews up an intoxicating musical hybrid sampling Latin, salsa, dub, rock, techno and French pop on infectious tunes like "Mentira", "Mama Call" and "Bongo Bong". Clandestino became a cult hit before becoming a classic of the emerging Latin alternative scene and one of the best-selling albums in French music history with sales of 2.5 million.

Followed on the success of his debut, Esperanza :Proxima Estacion was released in 2001 and explores the music of the Caribbean with great songs like "Mr Bobby", "Mi Vida" and "Trapper by Love".

After releasing the live album Radio Bemba Sound System in 2002 and producing an album for Malian duo, Amadou & Mariam, Chao went back to the studio for his next album, Sibérie m'était contéee.

Sibérie m'était contéee
sees Chao moving away from the sunny climes of Latino music for the intimate acoustics of winter in Paris with infectious new tunes like "Petite blonde du boulevard Brune" and "Le P'tit jardin".

A set of colourful, groovy World Music, Manu Chao plays Oxegen on Sunday, the 9th of July.
