Ben Harper, American folk rock singer/songwriter, plays Oxegen Music Festival on Sunday, the 9th of July.
Ben Harper comes to Oxegen with his band, The Innocent Criminals showcasing songs from his recent double album, Both Sides of the Gun.
After Ben Harper released his last album, Diamonds on the Inside in 2003, he embarked on a European Tour with the legendary gospel act, The Blind Boys of Alabama. The tour led to Harper and The Blind Boys of Alabama collaborating in the studio on the Grammy winning 2004 album, There Will Be a Light.
When Harper finally time to enter the studio to work on his next album, he found working with The Blind Boys of Alabama had fundamentally altered his approach to making music and given him a much clearer vision of how to record his next opus.
Searching for a loose, raw and immediate sound, Harper enlisted The Innocent Criminals and a host of other talented musicians to record a collection of soul songs, folk ballads and loud rock anthems, and separated nine hard songs and nine ballad songs into the double album, Both Sides of the Gun.
Both Sides of the Gun features Harper trademark mixes of upbeat socially conscious anthems like "Better Way", dark protest songs like the Hurricane Katrina songs, "Black Rain" and intimate love ballads like "Waiting For You".
Ben Harper came on the L.A. music scene in the early '90s with a heady brew of blues, folk, soul, reggae and rock music performed with heartfelt vocals and his distinctive acoustic slide guitar.
Signed to Virgin Records in 1992, Ben Harper released his debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World and over the next decade earned glowing reviews and a loyal fan base around the world for albums like Fight for Your Mind, The Will to Live, Burn to Shine and Diamonds on the Inside.
