Mick Hanly, legendary Irish singer/songwriter, plays The Helix on Friday, September 15th.
Mick Hanly is a veteran of the Irish music scene with an impressive collection of songs including "All I Remember", "My Love Is In America" and "Past The Point of Rescue". From his early fascination with rock 'n' roll to his work as a folk singer to his success as a country songwriter, Mick Hanly has always maintained a steady flow of quality songs.
Mick Hanly's earliest years in Limerick filled with The Beatles, The Animals, The Christian Brothers, hurling and the Leaving Cert. Found are brilliantly recreated in "All I Remember". In the early '70, Hanly saw Sean O'Riada's group and the legendary Clare uilleann piper Willie Clancy and was subsequently converted to Irish traditional music.
In 1972, Hanly met Michael O'Domhnaill and they formed a trad duo called Monroe who married the world of contemporary folk guitar with traditional songs. Monroe toured with Planxty and released an album Folk Weave for Polydor before O'Domhnaill left the band to join The Bothy Band.
In the late '70s, Hanly record a number of albums for the Mulligan label including A Kiss In The Morning Early and As I Went Over Blackwater featuring renowned trad musicians such as Donal Lunny, Andy Irvine, Matt Molloy and Noel Hill. In 1981, Christy Moore left Moving Hearts and Mick Hanly took over the role of lead singer.
Mick Hanly wrote some wonderful songs for Moving Hearts such as "All I Remember" and "Open Those Gates" and after four years with the band Hanly returned to his solo career. His first album of country songs Still Not Cured featured songs of heartache and new beginnings like "Still Not Cure", "The Silence" and "Sorry I Said What I Said".
In 1989, Mary Black covered one of Hanly's best-loved songs, "Past The Point of Rescue" for her album No Frontiers. This perfectly crafted song of unrequited love also ended up on the debut album of country star, Hal Ketchum and the song went on to become a massive hit the country charts in 1991.
Mick Hanly's latest album Wish Me Well was recorded with Declan Sinnott and another collection of well crafted songs like "I Feel I Should Be Calling You", "The Crusader" and "Cold, Cold, World".
A night of wonderful songs, Mick Hanly plays The Helix on Saturday, September 9th.
