Daniel Lanois, the master musician and producer of U2 and Bob Dylan, plays the Olympia on the 30th of October. Daniel Lanois is a talented man, an accomplished producer, a master guitarist and highly respected songwriter. Lanois made his name in the last two decades for understated, atmospheric and soulful recordings working with artists such as U2, Peter Gabriel, Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris. He is also has a well-respected solo artist, a writer of fragile and spiritual songs bathed in the ephemeral and beautiful sonic atmospherics which have become his trademark.
Lanois' career has been defined by his sonic genius and emphasis on performance. He acquired much of his sonic education when he collaborated with Brian Eno on such ambient classics as Music for Films and Apollo. Eno would become Lanois' chief mentor and collaborator as they worked on manipulating and exploring sounds to develop the kind of sonic atmosphere they wanted. Lanois' shimmering guitar riffs on Apollo were very influential on the Edge's guitar style with U2.
Lanois would go on to work with Eno on U2's The Unforgettable Fire where they used their production skills to create a production master class. Further success with Peter Gabriel's So and U2's The Joshua Tree albums sealed his reputation as a great producer.
If Lanois explored atmosphere and sounds with Eno, his own productions would focus on the integrity of performance. In an era of big name producers, Lanois' sparse artist and performance-centred recordings went against the grain of the overproduced recordings of the 80s and 90s. Using vintage equipment Lanois created the right sonic atmosphere to allow the artist find their best performance.
What made Lanois' production stand out was what he took out, how he simplified an artist's sound and let the artist get to the heart of what they were trying to say. This formula had wonderful results on albums such as Wrecking Ball for Emmylou Harris and Dylan's Time Out Of Mind and Oh Mercy.
Lanois brings the same sensibility to his own solo albums Acadie, For the Love of Wyonna and his most recent album Shine. The albums utilise his shimmering guitar style, his soft voice and his distinctive productions skills to create songs of great emotional honesty and intensity. On Shine Lanois is joined on duets by Emmylou Harris and Bono on songs that incorporate his master musicianship with his towering productions skills. This concert will be a very special experience for lovers of atmospheric, gentle and soulful music.
