Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper, legendary heavy metal icon, at Vicar Street on Wednesday, the 31st of May.

Alice Cooper began life in 1968 as a rock group comprising the talents of Vincent Furnier on vocals, Mike Bruce on guitar, Glen Buxton on guitar, Dennis Dunaway on bass and Neal Smith on drums. Alice Cooper moved to California in 1968 where they met their future manager, Shep Gordon and Frank Zappa, who signed the group to Straight Records.

Alice Cooper released their debut album, Pretties For You in 1969 followed by Easy Action in 1970. The bands were not making waves in Los Angeles, so they moved to Detroit where they began to perfect their strange stage show. Taking their influences from horror movies, vaudeville and heavy metal, Alice Cooper created a stage show that featured electric chairs, fake blood and boa constrictors.

In 1970, Alice Cooper moved to Warner Brothers and began recording their third album with Bob Ezrin. Love It To Death released in 1971 featured the hit single "Eighteen" and sold very well in the US. Their elaborate live show made them a massive live draw in the US and they also had success with their follow-up album, Killer.

The band's next album, School's Out was to be their breakthrough album with the single "School's Out" reaching the top ten in the US and the number one spot in the UK. Billion Dollar Babies proved to Alice Coopers most successful album spawning the hit single, "No More Mr. Nice Guy". Alice Cooper broke up after the recording of their last album, Muscle of Love and Alice Cooper became a solo act.

Alice Cooper had success with his solo albums, Welcome To My Nightmare and Alice Cooper Goes To Hell. After a period rehabilitating from alcoholism, Cooper made a comeback in the '80s with the albums, Constrictor and Trash. Trash featured guest appearance from Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and members of Aerosmith and a single taken from the album "Poison" became a big hit in the US and the UK.

In the last decade Alice Cooper has released albums such as Hey Stoopid, The Last Temptation and Brutal Planet. His iconic status was cemented when he featured in a Wayne's World movie where Wayne and Garth proclaimed they were not worthy. Be scared, be very scared, Alice Cooper is coming to town.
