Xuefei Yang, prodigious Chinese classical guitarist, plays the National Gallery of Ireland on Saturday, the 8th of July.
Xuefei Yang returns to the Waltons Guitar Festival of Ireland for another scintillating performance in the intimate environs of the National Gallery of Ireland.
A prodigious talent and pioneering spirit in Chinese music, Xuefei Yang began playing the guitar at the tender age of seven and made her first public appearance at the First Chinese International Guitar Festival.
At the festival, a very impressed Spanish Ambassador to China presented her with a guitar and Yang went on to win second prize in the Beijing Peony Cup Classical Guitar Competition as the youngest contestant at the age of 11.
Xuefei Yang was the first student majoring in classical guitar performance in China and graduated with a B.A. degree from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. While studying at the Conservatory, Yang gave concerts in China, Hong Kong and Spain and concert tours in Taiwan, Japan and Portugal.
The composer Rodrigo attended Yang's debut concert in Madrid at 14 and the following year, another musician playing at the festival, John Williams left his own Smallman guitar to her after hearing her play.
In 2000, Yang became the first Chinese guitarist to study classical guitar in the West under the tutelage of Michael Lewin, John Mills and Timothy Walker at the Royal Academy of Music.
During this time, Yang gave recitals at festivals in the UK, Germany, Finland, France and Singapore as well as playing Rodrigo's Fantasia para un Gentilhomber with the BBC Orchestra and the world premiere of Timothy Salter's Equipoise at the Park Lane Group's New Year Concert Series.
Yang Xuefei graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with distinction, receiving the Principal prize for exceptional all round studentship achieving a Recital Diploma and the dip RAM, the highest performance award conferred by the Royal Academy of Music.
A rising star in the international classical scene, Yang Xuefei performs at the National Gallery of Ireland on the 8th of July.
