Damien Dempsey hails from Donaghmede and had early exposure to music at his parent's singsongs when he was a kid. As he grew older, his music influences grew to embrace traditional Sean-Nos singing, Bob Marley and Elvis Presley.
After completing his secondary school, Dempsey studied at the Ballyfermot Rock School for three years. The school had its own small record label, Dempsey was chosen to record for the label and his debut EP "The Contender" was released.
In 1997, Dempsey released a single called "Dublin Town" which shot him into the Irish Top 20. "Dublin Town" introduced Dempsey music style, a funky hybrid of Irish folk and Bob Marley, served in a thick Dublin accent. His debut album, They Don't Teach this Shit in School followed in 2000.
Under the direction of veteran producer, John Reynolds, Dempsey began recording his second album, Seize the Day. The album featured guest appearance from Sinead O'Connor and Brian Eno and evocative songs like "Negative Vibes", "Industrial School" and "Jar Song". The album entered the Irish charts at No.5 and has since achieved platinum status.
Last year proved to be a very successful year for one Damien Dempsey. He supported Bob Dylan on his Irish tour, supported Morrissey at Dublin Castle and won twice at the Meteor Awards.
Counting Shane MacGowan, Christy Moore and Morrissey among his fans, Damien Dempsey plays Oxegen on Saturday the 8th of July.
