Kate Rusby, one of the leading light of the English folk scene, plays Vicar Street on Monday, the 10th of October.
Kate Rusby showcases songs from her new album, The Girl Who Couldn't Fly with an intimate performance in the capitol.
Kate Rusby can illuminate century old folk songs with her immediate and contemporary style and is a writer of songs that have all the maturity and timelessness of age-old folk classics.
Kate Rusby hails from Barnsley in Yorkshire and grew up in a family with strong ties to the British folk scene. Her parents ran a ceilidh dance band and Rusby joined the band singing backup and playing fiddle. Rusby also took up the guitar and began to take centre stage as a singer making her debut as a solo artist at the Holmfirth Festival. There she met folksinger, Kathryn Roberts and they started playing together as a duo. In 1995, they released the Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts album, which won the Folk Roots' Album of the Year award.
Firmly established in the British folk scene, Rusby released her debut album Hourglass in 1998. The album received enormous critical acclaim for her beautiful renditions of the old knights-and-dragons ballad, Sir Eglamore the old Irish ballad, I Am Stretched On Your Grave and a song of tragic young love, Drowned Lovers. Rusby followed up her debut with the equally wonderful, Sleepless and Little Lights albums and Underneath The Stars.
Underneath The Stars features old Rusby stalwarts John McCusker on fiddle, Ian Carr on guitar, Michael McGoldrick on flute and Andy Cutting on accordion with Ocean Colour Scene's Simon Fowler and Eddi Reader adding their vocals to the album's colourful musical canvas. Underneath The Stars demonstrates Rusby's growing maturity seamlessly joining the old world of songs like "The Blind Harper" with modern compositions like "Falling".
A wonderful night of contemporary folk music, Kate Rusby plays Vicar Street on the 10th.
