Michael Hurley a veteran of the American folk scene is a singer of beautiful old style Americana songs on the banjo, fiddle and guitar. Michael will be working his way through a wealth of songs by turn melancholic and funny.
Michael Hurley, known affectionately to his fans as the 'Snock', was born in 1941 in Florida. His early influences came from a wide range of American music styles such as Blues, Bluegrass, Country and Folk music. Hurley will be familiar to folk purist who will know of the eclectic albums he has released in the last four decades. Hurley's 1976 album Have Moicy a collaboration with the Unholy Modal Rounders was named the "greatest folk album of the rock era" by the Village Voice's Robert Christgau.
His musical style is often coined as Outsider Folk. In his songs Michael joins his love of old style folk music with his unusual and rich mine of lyrics. As Ann Powers wrote in the New York Times "Whether weaving a yarn about a mysterious hog or comparing the human heart to a mechanic box, Mr. Hurley created elaborate vistas in a musical version of outsider art".
And what might really surprise you is the crossover audience Hurley has gained over the last number of years from old style folkie and bluegrass purists to young alt country and indie music fans. Lately Hurley has becoming a patron saint of the alt-country scene with artist such as Cat Powers, Lucinda Williams, Giant Sand, Vic Chestnut, Yo La Tengo and Son Volt all singing his praises.
