Poetry in Dublin

A poetry reading from Dublin poet, Paul Durcan takes place in Trinity College Dublin on the 27th of October.

Poetry Ireland in association with Trinity College English Departments present the spellbinding poetry of Paul Durcan for at intimate poetry reading in The Edmund Burke Theatre.

Paul Durcan is one of Ireland's most popular and distinctive poets as an intelligent critic of Irish politics and culture, an unflinching portrayer of human emotions and a talented writer of romantic poetry .

Paul Durcan was born in Dublin in 1944 and was educated in University College Cork, where he studied archaeology and medieval history. Inspired by modern Irish poets like Patrick Kavanagh, Durcan began to write poems and published his first collection O Westport in the Light of Asia Minor in 1975.

Subsequent collections include The Selected Paul Durcan, Jesus and Angela and Going Home to Russia. The Berlin Wall Café, a series of poems about the break-up of Durcan's marriage, is his most popular collection and is regarded by many critics as his most important work.

His 1990 collection, Daddy Daddy addresses the death of his father with extraordinary candour and humanity and the poems for Crazy About Women were inspired by paintings in The National Gallery of Ireland. His most recent book, Cries of an Irish Caveman touches all of Durcan's favourite themes, Ireland, life, death, marriage and love with his trademark mix of humour, iconoclasm and lyricism.

Paul Durcan's poetry really comes to life with his dramatic and soulful readings making this opportunity to see him at The Edmund Burke Theatre all the more tantalising.
