Sir John Mortimer, barrister, playwright, and creator of Rumpole, presents his new show at the National Concert Hall on Friday, the 10th of June.
Sir John Mortimer is the writer who gave us the wonderful Rumpole of the Bailey and now he brings a rattle bag of stories, anecdotes and poetry to regal the capitol in June.
John Mortimer was born in 1923 and was the only child of a successful divorce attorney. Mortimer showed an early love of theatre and acting inspired by the works of Shakespeare, which he performed for his parents. After receiving his education at Harrow and Oxford, Mortimer followed his father into the legal profession. Mortimer made a name for himself as a champion of free speech defending Penguin Books for Lady Chatterley's Lover, The Sex Pistols and Oz magazine.
John Mortimer began writing novels and plays on the side to finance his ever growing family. By the 1970's he had become a very successful writer for radio and television using his legal experience to create the wonderful Rumpole, a cigar smoking, claret guzzling, barrister. His relationship with his father became the inspiration for A Voyage Around My Father with Alan Bates and Laurence Olivier and he also adapted the hugely successful, Brideshead Revisited for ITV.
A natural raconteur, Mortimer is guaranteed to have his audience rolling in the aisles with his hilarious stories and anecdotes on the 10th.
