A major retrospective on Sir William Orpen exhibits at the National Gallery from the 1st of June to the 28th of August.
A major retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery dedicated to Sir William Orpen reveals the full variety of the artist's work from his revitalisation of the nude and his conversation pieces to his extraordinary allegories, war paintings and his series of self portraits.
Born in Dublin in 1878, Sir William Orpen went on to become one of the most famous portrait painters of his day with a highly profitable practice both in London and Dublin. This exhibition comprises some 70 oil paintings drawn from public and private collections and received great critical acclaim when exhibited earlier this year at the Imperial War Museum in London.
The National Gallery will also present an exhibition entitled The Illustrated Letters and War Drawings comprising 90 items selected from the Gallery's collection of 366 sheets present by Vivien Graves in 1974. These letters and war drawings give a fascinating insight into a complex and sensitive man and focus on various aspects of Orpen's private and public life.
