Dublin Food Co-Op opens every Saturday from 9.30am to 3pm at the
St. Andrew's Centre at 114-116 Pearse Street.
This is a food co-operative of over a thousand members specialising mainly in organic food. All of the vegetables sold in the Co-op are organically grown in Ireland by certified organic growers, except in circumstances such as crop failure or poor harvest, when they are imported. A small number of processed food products are also sourced in Ireland, including flour, oat flakes, pasta, sea vegetables and some biscuits. However, the greater part of the Co-op's product range of beans, grains, dried fruit, oils and juices are imported from certified organic suppliers. The Co-op also carries Fair Trade tea, coffee, chocolate and dried fruit snacks.
You don't have to join to shop there. You can pay €2 per visit. Members pay a yearly subscription of €20 and you can pick up a form at the membership desk in the main hall. There is a 50% discount if you're unwaged, a student or a pensioner. The fee is reduced also if you join late in the year.
The co-op was originally established to save money for members by buying organic and wholefoods in bulk. The produce is Irish-produced, where possible and if imported comes from countries that uphold basic human rights.
The co-op was set up in 1983 by a group of friends involved in the campaign to stop the Government building a nuclear power station at Carnsore Point in Wexford.
