Road Records for all the best in indie, alternative, punk and roots
music.
Road Records is situated on 16B Fade Street just of George's Street. Dave Kennedy and Julie Collins set up Road Records in September 1997 to provide an outlet for independent and alternative rock music. The shop soon became popular with record buyers as stockists of the best and most exciting new indie releases. Dave and Julie have broadened their musical vision in the last few years to incorporate electronica, reggae and roots music.
The shop is comfortable and easily accessible. Dave and Julie stock what they consider to be the best music or artists in a given genre. While they might not have the exhausting stock of the bigger record shops, their expert advice and knowledge is a welcome change from the informality of other record shops in the city.
Initially, the shop specialised in independent, alternative and punk rock labels such as Matador, Jeepster, Domino, Too Pure and Independent. But Dave and Julie started stocking reggae 7's three years ago and this branched out into a reggae and roots section incorporating folk, country, bluegrass and blues. They have a very good vinyl section and an excellent online ordering service.
Road Records was one of the essential factors in the revitalisation of the Dublin music scene over the last couple of years. The shop became a meeting point for the emerging musical talent in the city and became a focal point for the underground Dublin music scene. Road offered to sells records by local bands without a label, a general release or distribution and gave them that essential starting point and record sales to go onto bigger and better things. To this end they set up Road Relish singles club releasing singles featuring such local favourites as David Kitt, The Frames and the Red Neck Manifesto.
Road Records is a great shop to browse through on a Saturday and offers an excellent introduction to the hidden gems of contemporary rock, indie, electronica, and roots music. The ever helpful Dave, Julie and sometimes Johnny will help you find the records you're looking for whether it's Radiohead, Leadbelly, The Strokes or Prince Buster.
