Revolution and Independence

Revolution was thick in the air, in fact it was hardly ever off the agenda but all previous attempts at rebellion had ended in miserable failure.

In 1916, a rising broke out which took the authorities completely by surprise. Around 800 men and women dared to take on 20,000 British troops. The result was a foregone conclusion and the week-long fighting left large parts of the city centre in rubble but the fervour of the people had been ignited.

The War of Independence broke out in 1919 and by 1921 a Truce was called which resulted in the British withdrawal from the southern 26 counties. Tragically, a civil war followed the establishment of the Irish Free State.

The result of this was not only the destruction of more of the city centre but the impoverishment of the country and the alienation of people across the civil war lines that was to last for a couple of generations.
