The Mansion House was originally built in 1705 for Joshua Dawson who was the developer of Dawson Street and Nassau Street.
Dawson's town house, partly unfinished and seldom lived in, was sold to the Corporation in 1715 for £3,500. The Lord Mayor of the day took up residence and thus Dublin preceded the City of London by some 15 years in providing an official house for its Mayor. The house was originally faced in brick but was later plastered and the city Coat-of-Arms was added to the pediment.
A further embellishment, the metal canopy at the front entrance, arrived in 1896. The Round Room beside the Mansion House was built in 1821 for a visit by King George IV and it was here that the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1919 and the signing of the Treaty took place.
