South City Markets, Great George's Street South
South City Markets was Dublin's first and only purpose built Victorian Shopping Centre.

Replacing the grimy old Castle Market on Great George's Street South, the monumental Gothic-embellish structure was designed by distinguishedBritish architects Lockwood &  Mauson, and promoted by wealthy families with extensive property interests in the city. It was formally opened by the Lord Mayor, Sir George Moyers LLD, in 1881. The occasion was marked by a large number of citizens being entertained to luncheon by the Chairman of the market company, Mr Joseph Tod Hunter Pim.

A year later, Dublin's biggest fire to date consumed the building and devastated the livelihood of stall holders. There was an outpouring of sympathy for their plight and a subscription fund was opened. The centre was restored, minus its four great pyramid towers, and reopened in 1894.

Today the central Market Arcade, whose stalls function in a restored Victorian ambiance, is a browser's delight. South Great George's Street, which had descended into the commercial doldrums in the 1970's, is beginning to return to the prominence it onceheld as a shopping precinct.
