Grand Canal
The Grand Canal provides an almost idyll setting as it curves its way through the south inner city.

A link between Dublin and the River Shannon was first mooted in 1715 but it did not become a reality until the Grand Canal, begun in 1755 reached the Shannon in 1805. It is now in the hands of Dúchas, The Heritage Service.

The canal remains navigable for it whole length and now within the city limits the water is of sufficient quality to support a variety of fish. The canal banks are a great resort for lunch-time office workers and the tow paths offer a walkers' paradise.
