Grand Canal Docks, opened in 1796, were designed to hold 600 ships
but rarely more than a few dozen availed of the facilities.
The Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA) owns a 9.6ha (24 acres) plot to the west and north of the two canal docks called Grand Canal Harbour. Here, the DDDA is constructing, in partnership with the private sector, at an estimated cost of £1.5 billion, 1,200 new homes, 100,000sq m (1,076,000sq ft) of offices, shops, restaurants, pubs, hotels, leisure, arts/cultural facilities and a new civic square.
