Ashtown Castle
When the Papal Nuncio moved in 1978 from his house (formerly the Under-Secretary's Lodge) in the Phoenix Park the structure was found to be irreparable due to dry rot.

It  was subsequently demolished whereupon the park authorities were astonished to find a small castle standing inside the rubble. It had obviously been incorporated into the old lodge and forgotten about.

Dating from at least the 16th century it has been beautifully restored and Ashtown Castle now forms part of the excellent Phoenix Park Visitor Centre.
