The Phoenix Park
The Phoenix Park, named after Phoenix House, the first residence built within its confines, is a mere 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometres) from O'Connell Street.

Summary
During the 1670s, in an effort to impress and please the recently restored monarch, Charles II, the dignitaries of Dublin, led by the Viceroy, the Duke of Ormonde, walled in part of the former lands of the great Priory of the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem.  This new park was stocked with game for the King's exclusive pleasure but in time it devolved into the public domain and has since given recreation and relaxation to millions of visitors.

It is Europe's largest urban walled park and comprises 1,752 acres (708 hectares) of grassland, lakes, ornamental gardens and wooded areas.  It is home to an abundance of wildlife and also contains many historical sites and monuments.  Within its demesnes live the President of Ireland, the United States Ambassador and the animals of the world's oldest zoo after that in London's Regent Park.  Since its foundation it has witnessed monumental events of political and religious significance.
